One of the most even-tempered pets a family can hope to have can also pull double duty as a hunting dog. Beagles are known for their easy tempers and eagerness to please their owners so much that they are willing to learn new tricks and behaviors, making them ideal as family pets. Although not necessarily shy, they may be a little reluctant to make friends as first, but will usually warm up quickly to strangers. They are also very rarely aggressive and genuinely happy to be around recognized people.

Back in the 1300’s and 1400’s the British monarchy was in full swing and there were things that they found to be very appealing to them. One favorite pet of the British monarchy back in those days was a breed of beagle known as the pocket beagle. A pocket beagle measured only 9 inches to the shoulders and back in those days it was very popular. But today the American Kennel Club only lists beagle breeds that are 13″ and 15″ as being the current breeds of beagles. So what happened to the pocket beagle?

This article concerns the issue of beagle rescue. Before that topic is addressed, it is important to know a little bit about this breed of dog. Beagles have been popular as hunting dogs and family pets as far back as 19th century England. This sturdy, independent breed was registered with the American Kennel Club in 1885. Hunters relied on the specific bark of the beagle as it scented out its prey and its affinity and enthusiasm for the chase. Though still used as hunting or scent dogs due to their superb sense of smell, beagles are also loved for their affable temperament. Beagles get along with most other breeds though they don’t always show as much affection for other pets in the household unless socialized with them from birth. In other words: Cats beware!

Arguably, the most famous Beagle on Earth is Snoopy, the dog star of the long running American comic strip “Peanuts”. However, in the last fifty years, the characters frequently remark that Snoopy was bought from a puppy mill. If “Peanuts” had been created today, Charlie Brown would have gotten Snoopy from a Beagle rescue shelter. Beagles are intelligent, resilient, friendly, and will sneak up to lick your lips, just like Snoopy.

Beagle puppies have to be one of the hardest little animals to resist. One look into those expressive eyes will melt your heart and weaken your resolve. This may be why Beagle puppies get placed in homes so quickly ? and why some will end up in Beagle rescue organizations when the training and care of the animal becomes more than the owner bargained for. Like any potential pet, Beagles have their good points and their not so good points, and a prospective owner will do well to learn both sides of the coin before ever heading to the breeder to check out the latest litter.

People love their beagle pictures and they love to share their beagle pictures. Many people will host websites dedicated to their beagles and not only will they show you the day to day pictures of beagles and their owners but you can also find many beagle pictures where the owner has put the beagle in funny or cute poses. Smaller beagles seem to always bring out the photographer in any owner and some of the owner’s websites have some great beagle pictures on them.

The history of the breed of dog called the Beagle is largely unknown. Some say the breed dates back to 200 A.D. Others believe the Beagle descends from 19th century English “Harriers,” which are a breed of medium sized English hounds. The breed began to be referred to as “Beagle” in the 1800s and was registered with the American Kennel Club in 1885. Their popularity has raised demand for purebred Beagles. A side effect is that there are both reputable and disreputable Beagle breeders attempting to profit from the sale of purebred puppies.
